‘Free Bouncy Rides’ Dolphin Turns to Selling ‘Crack’

  • 8/13/09 at 12:00 PM

The problem with obnoxious publicity hounds is that to write about them is to give them what they want. So it is with Nate Hill, 31, the hipster who once bought a dolphin costume and ever since has been using it to try to carve out a niche for himself as an auteur/perv. First he would just show up at clubs wearing the dolphin head. Then he wore the whole costume and rode around on the subway offering people "Free Bouncy Rides!" (Watch the video — it's both funnier and creepier than it sounds.) This of course made him a hipster darling, but apparently didn't garner him enough mainstream-media attention. So now Hill has taken his dolphin head and is selling fake drugs on the streets of Williamsburg and Greenpoint. This, of course, made the Daily News go wild with disapproval. Their story today was headlined: "Being Criminally Stupid Is Not Illegal." Local groups who have spent decades trying to get drugs off the streets in those recently gentrified neighborhoods do not think the whole rock-candy act is hilarious; they think it's offensive. Which is, of course, the point, because pissing off people who work hard to do good deeds is edgy. And it gets you the most precious thing in the world (or at least Williamsburg): attention.
