In a surprise move, Plaxico Burress has accepted a plea deal in his gun-possession case and will spend two years in prison. During what was expected to be a routine court appearance, the former Giants wide receiver pleaded guilty to a reduced count of attempted criminal possession of a weapon, nine months after shooting himself in the thigh at a Manhattan nightclub. (His lawyer, Benjamin Brafman, says that if he behaves himself behind bars, he should end up serving about twenty months.) Mayor Bloomberg, who’d called for Burress to receive the full three-and-a-half-year sentence, only reiterated that he believes “the laws should apply to everyone,” former Super Bowl hero or otherwise. Added Brafman: "Unfortunately, there was no legal defense we could offer." [NYDN]
