While most everyone is focusing on Muammar Qaddafi's tent or Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's Holocaust denials, an arguably more infuriating and hateful group from within our own borders is visiting New York this week as well. The infamous Westboro Baptist Church of Kansas — the vehemently anti-gay, anti-Semitic, anti-Catholic, anti-Islam (okay, anti-everything) group most widely known for picketing the funerals of fallen soldiers — is embarking on a three-day tour of Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and Long Island, beginning with a protest near the U.N. tomorrow, according to the schedule posted on their subtly named website, godhatesfags.com. After frightening foreign visitors, the group will swing by a number of area high schools, Jewish community centers, and synagogues, including one in Huntington during a day after the memorial service for murdered Yale student Annie Le, because they have no souls. Finally, the group will finish up with a protest outside of St. Patrick's Cathedral before departing our fair and tolerant city. We hope they have time to catch Billy Elliot before they go!
