Newsday Takes the Pay-Wall Plunge

Today, Long Island's Newsday becomes one of the nation's first major papers to put its entire site behind a pay wall. From now on, if you want to read Newsday online, you need to shell out $5 a week. Trailblazing! Except, not really. As Editor & Publisher points out, subscribers to Cablevision-owned Newsday or Optimum Online — a.k.a. 75 percent of Long Island — get access for free. Of course, the pay wall now means that nobody outside of Long Island will ever visit the Newsday website again, but how many people did that include to begin with? [E&P]
