Tea Partiers to Get All Up In Congress’s Grill Today, for Freedom

Generally insane person and Minnesota congresswoman Michele Bachmann is leading a last charge against health-care reform today — a so-called “Super Bowl of Freedom” — with a protest that will bring tea-party activists into the very halls of Congress. (Sadly, they’ll have to leave their assault rifles at the door this time.) With the House of Representatives set to vote on its health-care bill this Saturday evening, Bachmann and the anti-reform conservative group Americans for Prosperity are hoping that Blue Dog Democrats will be “scared” into voting against the bill after being directly confronted with the same angry citizens that previously scared people pretty effectively during town halls this summer.

Accordingly, after rallying on the steps of the Capitol, activists will fan out to give these targeted congressmen a piece of their minds, face to face. “I think that will absolutely scare these members of Congress so much that Pelosi will not get the votes and it will kill the bill,” Bachmann said last night. “I think it could be dead for ten years.” Washington Monthly’s Steve Benen notices that all this freedom-defending happens to be taking place on November 5, the day Guy Fawkes attempted to bomb the House of Parliament. (Remember, from your European history class? Or, more likely, V for Vendetta?) Not that this group will be looking for trouble. “Don’t bring your pitchforks,” Bachmann told activists last night, “bring your video cameras.” Of course, you never know what to expect from a group that has to be told to not bring their pitchforks.
