New Republic to Start Charging for Content

Following in the model of magazines like The New Yorker, The New Republic will soon erect a pay wall between online users and the content that appears in its print magazine. While much of the current online content will remain free (blogs and online features), according to a press release today the rest of their writing will cost $29.97 (or $39.97 for print and digital subscriptions). For $44.97 you can also get access to nearly 100 years of TNR archives. The new pay service will be called “TNR Society,” which not only sounds a little like the Times’ failed “Select” venture, but also kind of like a drinking club that is full of fun but slightly judgy, overeducated drunks.
