Will the GOP Ignore Katrina All Weekend?

The annual Southern Republican Leadership Conference opened up in New Orleans last night with speeches from conservative strategist Mary Matalin, Obama antagonist Liz Cheney, former congressman J.C. Watts, and prospective presidential candidate Newt Gingrich. As Ben Smith points out, though there were references to the city’s food, culture, and football team, nobody even mentioned Hurricane Katrina, an event that doesn’t conjure especially fond memories for the GOP. To use the words of Bob McDonnell, maybe it’s just not “significant” enough. [Ben Smith/Politico]
