Subway Map Gets a Makeover

Next month, the MTA will be giving one of the city’s most recognizable icons — the subway map — a face-lift. The new version will be “resized, recolored and simplified,” adding emphasis to Manhattan (which will be widened by 30 percent), and shrinking Staten Island in half. The other three boroughs will grow with the elimination of the “service guide” that currently lines the map’s bottom border. Overall, the new map is meant to be “simpler” and less cluttered, which should hopefully reduce the amount of time you have to spend awkwardly hunched over a stranger, trying not to make physical contact as you squint to figure out where you need to transfer.
