When you’re down 10 percentage points in the latest polls, you’ve got a couple of options. Either you can trust that the $163 million (and counting) of your own money you’ve shelled out to see the word Governor before your name will pay off. Or you can call for the deportation of the woman who worked in your home for nine years, six of which might have fallen after the Social Security administration informed you she was using forged documents. Meg Whitman went with deportation, but that doesn’t mean sacrificing someone who used to clean her house in order to appear consistent on illegal immigration doesn’t tear her up inside.
“It breaks my heart, but she should be deported because she forged documents, and she lied about her immigration status … And it breaks my heart. Gloria Allred pulled off a political stunt. And you know what? On November 3rd, no one’s going to care about Nicky Diaz. But the law is the law, and we live in the rule of law. It’s important.”
There’s no denying a nuanced argument like “the law” is “important.” But some people will probably care about Diaz after the midterms, just no one who was going to vote for Whitman.
