Sometimes Drunk People Transport Nuclear Weapons Across the Country

According to the inspector general of the Department of Energy, there have been sixteen “alcohol-related incidents involving agents, candidate-agents, and others from the government’s Office of Secure Transportation” — the specialized 600-person unit that securely transports nuclear weapons and their parts from place to place around the country — “between 2007 through 2009.” In two incidents, agents were even arrested or detained by police.

Now, from time to time, every one of us asks ourselves, “Should I get drunk right now?” And it’s not always clear when it’s appropriate to answer in the affirmative.
