Amanpour Sits Down With Mubarak: ‘If I Resign Today, There Will Be Chaos’

Looks like getting hassled by pro-government thugs in Tahrir Square was worth the scare. ABC’s Christiane Amanpour scored a 30-minute interview with embattled Egyptian autocrat Hosni Mubarak at the presidential palace today while she was there to talk to his new VP, Omar Suleiman. Like Suleiman, who blamed the banned Muslim Brotherhood party for the violence, Mubarak too invoked the regime’s favorite bogeyman as a threat to the nation’s stability should he give into protesters’ demands and leave office immediately. Amanpour, whose full interview will air tonight, gave Diane Sawyer the highlights: “He told me, ‘I am fed up. After 62 years in public life, I have had enough, I want to go,’ adding, ‘If I resign today, there will be chaos.’” Has no one told him what’s happening outside?
