GOP-Backed Bill Could Require IRS Auditors to Ask for Abortion Receipts

Stipulations in the Republicans’ “No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act” would force IRS agents to act, essentially, as abortion police. In order to comply with the bill, which is expected to easily pass in the House, during an audit, agents would require evidence from taxpayers whether any tax benefit had been inappropriately used to pay for an abortion. IRS agents would have to investigate whether terminated pregnancies were the result of rape or incest. One tax expert told Mother Jones that the measure might even result in tax-form questions like: “Have you had an abortion? Did you keep your receipt?”

That’s because the proposed law, also known as H.R. 3, extends the ban on federal funding for abortion into many parts of the federal tax code. If women who used the benefit were audited, the burden would be on them to prove the tax credits or deductions weren’t used to pay for an abortion that wasn’t due to rape, incest, or danger to the life of the mother. Women would also have to prove that the health insurance they had purchased did not cover abortions. For a political party that sees the IRS like a bunch of jackbooted thugs, the GOP sure is eager to give them a front-row seat to your uterus.
