News of the World Owes ‘Unreserved Apology’ for All That Voice-Mail Hacking

After News of the World reporter Neville Thurlbeck and former news editor Ian Edmondson were arrested earlier this week, the tabloid has offered an “unreserved apology” to celebs whose private voice mails somehow found their way into print, and will likely dole out $160,000 settlements to each angry famous person. Cinema sexpot Sienna Miller and about two dozen others have active suits against the rag, which is owned by Rupert Murdoch’s News International. NotW allegedly listened in on Miller’s travel plans and thoughts about conceiving with Jude Law — all because someone known as “John from credit control” tricked Vodafone into changing her PIN! “Past behaviour at the News of the World in relation to voicemail interception is a matter of genuine regret,” the paper said in a statement. Even “I’m sorry I hacked your phone” sounds classier in the Queen’s English. [BBC]
