When Saturday came and went as uneventfully as any other Saturday in memory, Harold Camping the 89-year-old Christian-radio broadcaster who has predicted for years that May 21, 2011, was the exact date that the rapture would occur had some ‘splainin’ to do. Not to us logical, skeptical people who actually enjoyed watching this whole thing unfold, but to the thousands of followers who devoted their lives and their bank accounts to spreading the word of the impending apocalypse based on Camping’s reading of the Bible. As responsible as those people are for their own incomprehensible gullibility, perhaps Camping still owed them an apology, and maybe an acknowledgment that, in retrospect, he clearly has no idea when the world will end.
Instead, speaking for 90 minutes last night, Camping insisted that Judgment Day had actually occurred as promised. But it was, um, one of those invisible Judgment Days.
Judgment Day on May 21 did come, said Camping. However, he clarified that the Judgment Day arrived in a spiritual sense rather than manifesting physically.
So when earthquakes strike the Earth for 24 hours, it’s Judgment Day, and when nothing happens at all, it’s also Judgment Day. Got it.
Obviously, this is not a satisfying response. But what did we expect? If Camping were capable of rational, objective introspection, he wouldn’t have predicted the exact date that God would beam people up to heaven to begin with.
