Jackie O’s Love Will Cost You $134,500

An anonymous “French lady” is now the proud owner of the 22 love letters once belonging to Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, after placing the winning bid at Christie’s on Thursday. The letters aren’t between Jackie and J.F.K.— or between Jackie and her shipping-magnate love Aristotle Onassis — but rather between the former First Lady and her Harvard boyfriend R. Beverley Corbin Jr. In the Christie’s catalogue description, Kennedy is described as “a funny, spirited, at times cynical young woman, but one with great intelligence and a strong will of her own.”

To illustrate just how different a time it was, Corbin Jr. wrote her at one point, upset that she hadn’t kissed him the last time they had seen one another. Jackie replied, “I do love you though — and can love you without kissing you every time I see you and I hope you understand that.” And then, three months later, came the inevitable breakup letter. “I’ve always thought of being in love as being willing to do anything for the other person — starve to buy them bread and not mind living in Siberia with them — and I’ve always thought that every minute away from them would be hell — so looking at it that (way) I guess I’m not in love with you,” she wrote. Our favorite line of Jackie prose? Her teen angst, put to pen: “If school days are the happiest of your life, I’m hanging myself with my skip-rope tonight,” she wrote. So emo!
