During an eleven-hour session on Saturday, Pakistan’s parliament condemned the U.S. raid on an Abbottabad compound that killed Osama bin Laden, calling it “a sting operation on us,” referring to the fact that the Obama administration had not informed Pakistan in advance. It also called for a review of its counterterrorism cooperation agreement with the U.S., authorized an independent investigation into the raid, and ordered the immediate end of drone attacks along its border. Failure to end unilateral U.S. raids and drone attacks will force Pakistan “to consider taking necessary steps, including withdrawal of the transit facility” used by NATO, according to the resolution. Pakistani Lieutenant General Ahmed Shuja Pasha blamed an intelligence failure for the presence of bin Laden in Abbottabad, and Pasha said he has twice offered his resignation as a result. In any case, U.S. Senator John Kerry plans to visit Pakistan this week for a chat with the country’s leaders, to help “build and improve” relations between the U.S. and Pakistan, he said.
