Senator Scott Brown Will Go to Afghanistan for Military Training

Sometimes you forget Massachusetts senator Scott Brown is an active member of the National Guard. And then he does something cool like point out that, when he says gay troops should be allowed to serve openly, he actually knows what he’s talking about, unlike many proponents of “don’t ask, don’t tell.” Today, amid all the crazy headlines about Osama bin Laden comes the news that Brown will participate in his annual National Guard training in Afghanistan. He asked to do so so it would “help me to better understand our ongoing mission in that country and provide me first-hand experience for my duties on the Senate Armed Services, Homeland Security, and Veterans Affairs committees.” Yes, it would be nice to have someone on those committees who’d served on the ground in one of our current battlefields, wouldn’t it?
