Cuomo Says No Nukes, and Means It

It’s not the first time Governor Cuomo has called for Indian Point’s closure, but it’s the first time that shutting down the relatively risky Westchester nuclear power plant has looked like a clear possibility, thanks to newly passed legislation. The Times reports that when the power plant’s licenses expire over the next several years, the state can help block their renewal by denying them access to water from the Hudson River to use as a coolant. Cuomo’s administration has been vocal from the start about closing the plant, but until reps met with Entergy last week, they “had not [yet] delivered the message so directly to the company, or in such strong words, and company officials left the meeting alarmed.” When you’ve got the guys who control nuclear energy scared, you know you’re having a moment.
