City Offices Opening on a Sunday for Gay Weddings

New York City will open city offices across all five boroughs on Sunday, July 24, so gay couples can marry on the day legalization of same-sex marriage goes into effect. (Municipal offices are usually closed on Sundays.) What’s more, state judges have volunteered to be on hand that day to officiate the wedding ceremonies, and they’re waiving the usual 24-hour period couples must wait to get married after receiving a license. “This is a historic moment,” Mayor Bloomberg said. “We’re not going to make them wait one day longer than they have to.” [NYT]
