FBI Is Now Investigating News Corp. [Updated]

The feds are looking into claims that Rupert Murdoch’s British journalists tried to hack into the voice mails of 9/11 victims. No one else better snoop into Americans’ private lives on the bureau’s watch.

According to the Associated Press, the “decision to investigate was made after U.S. Rep. Peter King and several other members of Congress wrote FBI Director Robert Mueller demanding an investigation.” King — chairman of the House Committee on Homeland Security and best known for his McCarthy-esque Muslim hearings — told the AP he hadn’t heard back from the agency, but would be “gratified” if they let him know personally his entreaties didn’t go unheard.

The company, which has been in “crisis mode” since the News of the World scandal broke, might also be prosecuted under the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, as Eliot Spitzer lays out in Slate. Additionally, FCC chairman Julius Genachowski told Congress today the matter should be looked into, a shift from his position earlier this week; though he didn’t precisely say whether his agency would do so, it could also censure the broadcasting company. The scandal is a moving target, and it’s one that Felix Salmon thinks could end up with Rupert Murdoch’s career in the crosshairs sooner rather than later — a big-game hunt indeed.
