When he was released from a Scottish prison in August of 2009 on compassionate grounds, Abdelbaset al-Megrahi, the 59-year-old Libyan convicted of taking part in the 1988 bombing of a Pan Am jet, was supposed to die from prostate cancer within three months. But he’s still alive two years later, and now, with the fall of the Qaddafi regime, British and American officials want him back. But the justice minister in the new Libyan government doesn’t have any plans to comply:
“Al-Megrahi has already been judged once and he will not be judged again,” he told journalists in Tripoli. “We do not hand over Libyan citizens, [Muammar] Gaddafi does.”
It may not make much of a difference, though. CNN found Megrahi in Libya yesterday, and he’s not doing so hot:
