Kim Jong-Il was a deranged, ruthless dictator who, since 1994, ran one of the world’s most defective, repressive regimes. But you wouldn’t know it from the reaction of the North Korean people during his funeral procession in the streets of Pyongyang today, where — with cameramen from state-run media there to document the totally genuine outpouring of grief — North Koreans sobbed in over-the-top, sometimes even violent fits of tears. It’s like watching footage of teenage girls at a Beatles concert, except all of them dropped acid first, too.
