Rupert Murdoch’s media conglomerate is still facing dozens of lawsuits related to allegations of phone hacking, and has hired a new general counsel to help deal with the continuing investigation and its fallout. The position, which has been vacant since June, will go to Gerson Zweifach of Williams & Connolly, the firm best known for defending President Clinton during his impeachment and Lieutenant Colonel Oliver North during the Iran-Contra affair. “I could not be more thrilled to join the leader in global media at such a pivotal time in its history,” said Zweifach delicately, like an old pro. “It would be hard to imagine a more compelling opportunity to have far-reaching impact across a variety of legal issues and challenges.” Optimism like that must not come cheap.
