Gay Marriage Bill Passes in Washington State

One week after the Washington State Senate approved a bill legalizing gay marriage, the House followed suit, passing the measure by a 55–43 margin. Democratic governor Chris Gregoire is expected to sign the bill into law next week, although opponents might delay the measure's effective date with a ballot measure seeking to overturn the law that wouldn't be decided until a November election. Republican representative Maureen Walsh, whose daughter told her she was gay a few years ago, voted in favor of the bill on the basis of equality. "Nothing's different," Walsh said. "She's still a fabulous human being. And some day, by God, I want to throw a wedding for that kid."
