The Yale Muslim Students Association has voiced their opposition NYPD surveillance on campus with a pointed photo campaign. Last week, Yale president Richard Levin said “police surveillance based on religion, nationality, or peacefully expressed political opinions is antithetical to the values of Yale, the academic community, and the United States,” to which Mayor Bloomberg responded, “Yale’s freedoms to do research, to teach, to give people a place to say what they want to say is defended by the law enforcement throughout this country.” The kids’ take is sharper.
In more than 100 photos branded “Call the NYPD,” Yale students proudly state their affiliations, from “I’m a … Muslim” to “I’m a pro-choice compulsive liar” and even, “I am an avid cupcake baker.” The portraits are serious, satirical, and anthropomorphic.
“Together,” the group says, “these Yalies refuse to endorse profiling based on race, religion, or status as a history major.”
