It’s rare to spot someone in New York City using a pay phone for anything other than a little privacy while puking, but the system is getting an upgrade, essentially bringing Internet cafés to the streets. Computers called “My Internet Kiosk Everywhere,” or MIKE, will begin replacing the antiquated public phones in a few months, the New York Post reports, featuring 22-inch touch screens, access to the web, cameras, and electrical outlets. The machines will charge $1 for four minutes online and 50 cents for a 15-minute call, in addition to a tax on your human soul. Words With Friends is hopefully angling for an app partnership now, because what if your phone dies while it’s your turn?
