Ray Kelly Is ‘Contemplating’ a Run for Mayor

As Chris Smith writes in this week’s New York, rumors of a Ray Kelly mayoral campaign are nothing but a win-win for the police commissioner. Normally, he’s content to let others advance the narrative and simply say that he has “no plans” for running for a new office, but when Daily Intel caught up with him this weekend at The New Yorker’s cocktail party at the W Hotel the night before the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, he was a tick less cagey. “I’m the police commissioner. I’m running for police commissioner,” he said at first. “I want to hold on to my job.  I don’t know — I might be out the door!” said Kelly. But when we asked him directly whether he was open to the idea of running for mayor, Kelly said, “I’m still contemplating that.” Throw a tiny bit more grist into the rumor mill. And, at least according to Post columnist Fred Dicker, Kelly might even snag support from Democratic Governor Andrew Cuomo, who’s “open” to the idea of endorsing the police commissioner.
