The NYPD announced this morning that 15-year-old Destiny Sanchez, who was found unconscious in a Hunts Point lobby Friday morning, was choked and smothered before she died. Her death is being classified as a homicide and the investigation is ongoing. Police officials added that the girl’s uncle, 34-year-old Luis Vega, was taken into custody for endangering the welfare of a child by allowing Sanchez to drink alcohol in his presence prior to her death. Family and friends formed a makeshift memorial in front of the girl’s house today on Spofford Avenue.
