Should Alex Kuczynski Cut Her Hair Short or Leave It Long?

The Times fired a lot of good writers so that important questions like these could be posed on its website, so try to have an opinion. [T Magazine Blog/NYT]

Someone, Possibly a Terrorist, Has Stolen a Brooklyn School’s Fiberglass Cow

A life-size fiberglass cow originally created during the city's CowParade art project in 2000 has vanished from Seth Low Intermediate School in Bensonhurst. The cow had been bought by the school and repainted in a peace motif by the students in 2006. Now it's gone, people are reportedly crying, and everyone knows who to blame: terrorists. "I think it was terrorists, because they don't like peace," posits 11-year-old Niki Lam. That's right, Niki — whether the culprit is an official member of Al Qaeda or simply a common prankster, he (probably a he) has, in fact, inflicted terror in the hearts of you children, and is therefore a terrorist. Or some kind of sex pervert with a faux-cow fetish. Once they waterboard him, we'll find out the whole story.

Public Schools Wimp Out, Call Snow Day in Advance

No school tomorrow! Even though our weathermen are recently proven liars, the New York City Education Department is heeding warnings of a major snowstorm tomorrow, and have canceled school. "While travel conditions to school in the morning may not be difficult, the weather is expected to worsen as the day progresses, complicating dismissal," a spokesman said. We guess it's nice to know you can sleep in, but isn't part of the magic of a snow day watching the morning news with bated breath, waiting to see your school's name appear? [NYDN]

Straight-Talking Former Federal Prosecutor Is Getting the SEC to Actually Apply Themselves

Back in early 2008 the Securities and Exchange Commission was like a baseball team at a crummy school in a run-down neighborhood. They were overweight, out of shape, possibly learning-disabled, and prone to fumbling. Everyone regarded them as basically a joke, especially their coach, Chris Cox, who was really only there so he could fill out his time card in public service and move on to something better. The constant disrespect and lack of attention caused the SEC to develop low self-esteem, and thus, when people were nice to them — like Bernie Madoff — they ate up the attention. But then something very bad happened. Madoff, having lured them into his home with stories and sweets, violently raped the SEC, wrote HAHAHA SUCKERS on their foreheads, and hung them by their underwear on a fence outside the gym. Not literally, but, you know, metaphorically. After this humiliating incident made national headlines, the school finally took it upon themselves to appoint a new coach, in the form of SEC head of enforcement Robert S. Khuzami, or, as we're calling him after today's feel-good NYT story, the Khuzmaster.

Richard Shelby Releases His Stranglehold on the Federal Government

After five days, the Great Cotton State Cockblock of '10 has finally come to an end. Last night, Alabama senator Richard Shelby decided to release his vicelike grip on all but three of President Obama's more than 70 federal appointees awaiting confirmation, having achieved his goal of "get[ting] the White House's attention." But like a child who throws a tantrum in the aisles of a supermarket, Shelby hasn't convinced mommy to buy him Fruit Roll-Ups, as the White House says it hasn't agreed to any of Shelby's demands. Jessica Szohr and Ed Westwick Snog Through Super Bowl

Following some smooches for the Super Bowl cameras and a night aboard Paul Allen's yacht, Brangelina issued a legal statement saying reports of their separation were "false and intrusive," suing the News of the World newspaper for their false allegations. Ed Westwick and Jessica Szohr were "making out like crazy" in one of the back cabanas at Maxim's Super Bowl party, where Audrina Patridge, Brody Jenner, Nick Lachey, and Vanessa Minnillo were standing around doing whatever they do at parties they're paid to attend. Kendra Wilkinson broke down in tears after her husband Hank Baskett's team lost the Super Bowl, claiming she wasn't upset by the "damn game," but rather because the paparazzi wouldn't stop bothering her. But she was so out of it she didn't even recognize A-Rod when he waved to her. Giant Justin Tuck's wife went into labor on Super Bowl Sunday, causing him to skip out on the Hudson Terrace party he was slated to host. And while imitating Super Bowl star Drew Brees, David Letterman threw a football to his stage manager, Biff Henderson, causing Henderson to take a tumble that landed him in the hospital.

Security Beefed Up for State Senate’s Monserrate Vote

The State Senate is expected to vote today on the fate of civil-rights icon Hiram Monserrate, though it's unclear at this point whether he'll be censured or expelled. In any case, the State Senate is calling in a greater police presence just in case things get crazy. Once all the drinking glasses are replaced with Dixie cups, that place will be a fortress. [NYDN]

Lucas Van Praag Now Blogging For Huffington Post

Goldman Sachs spokesman Lucas van Praag is apparently way too pissed at the Times to give them any more page views. Today, he took to the Huffington Post to make a point-by-point rebuttal of Gretchen Morgenson and Louise Story's piece in the Sunday Times, headlined "Testy Conflict With Goldman Helped Push A.I.G. to Edge." "This is the third theory the paper has put forward since September 2008," van Praag sniffs in his inimitable manner. "The theories are contradictory and many of the supporting 'facts' don't stand up to serious scrutiny."

We Are Now Entering Day Five of Coverage of a Times Story That Hasn’t Even Been Completed Yet

Can someone please come up with a rumor explaining why he shaved his beard a while back? We bet you people could come up with something really good.

We will admit, we're just as guilty as the rest of the New York press (except, notably, the Times itself) in overcovering this much-hyped coming story about David Paterson in the New York Times. At this point, there is no possible way it could live up to expectations, and for that reason we've argued that all this buzz — which Paterson himself has taken steps to combat already — is probably a net positive for the governor in terms of the expectations game. Except that it has given certain other outlets what they feel is an excuse to report rumors that they have no direct evidence supporting, just because there's a maelstrom of gossip and hearsay flying around the capital at the moment.

Democrats, Republicans Can’t Even Agree on Conditions for Kabuki Health-Care Summit

If there was some sincere hope inside the White House that by putting a bi-partisan, half-day summit on live television, Republicans and Democrats would somehow find common ground on an issue as divisive as health-care reform, that's pretty much over now. Because the White House and Republican leaders can't even agree on the conditions for the meeting itself. Yesterday, House Minority Leader John Boehner and Minority Whip Eric Cantor made it known that the House GOP's participation was contingent on certain demands being met, demands which include the scrapping of the entire legislation the Democrats have been working on since, it feels like, antediluvian times. Robert Gibbs responded with his own letter, in which he reaffirmed Obama's commitment to the Democratic bill:

F Train to Get Way Worse Before It Gets Better

Four months after the MTA finally figured out what the H was wrong with the F train comes a report that they're taking drastic steps to improve service on the line — steps that will make things way worse in the short term. The F train will completely shut down for at least seven different weekends this year in large stretches of trendy Brooklyn, between Jay Street-Borough Hall and Church Avenue. As happened for six weekends last year, commuters will be forced to cram into slow-moving shuttles that will cross Cobble Hill, Carroll Gardens, and Park Slope during those time periods. Even yoga instructors are rattled! "People are going to totally freak out," yoga guru Laura Stryjewski told the Post. "Taking the shuttle is a royal pain." So far, the shutdowns are scheduled for the weekends starting February 20, February 27, May 8, May 15, May 22, November 13, and November 20. As a bonus, the dreaded G train will also be shut down those weekends. There are more weekend closures expected in 2011, but don't worry, the F train will definitely be all fixed up by 2012.

Snow is Coming. . . For Real This Time

After we got all worked up about a potential New York blizzard this past weekend for nothing. . . it looks like it’s time to get all worked up again. Forecasters are issuing a “winter storm watch” for all five New York City boroughs, as well as for most of Connecticut, New Jersey and New York, from Tuesday night until Wednesday night. CBS News is predicting “significant snowfall” for the New York City metropolitan area, with anywhere from six to ten inches of snow. [CBS News]

Serial Cat Killer Avoids Jail

Lynde, in 2009, on his way into the District Attorney's office.

Remember that plot on The Office a while back where Dwight killed Angela’s cat by sticking it in a freezer and it was “funny” because it was just so outlandish? Well, turns out killing your girlfriend's cat in real life can result in bigger problems than just getting a scolding from Steve Carrell.

A 37-year-old alleged “serial cat killer” was let go today after a Manhattan Supreme Court judge signed off on a no-jail plea deal. Sean Lynde had been charged with murdering five of his ex-girlfriend’s cats from October 2008 to January 2009 while they were living in her West Side apartment.

Bloomberg Among 2009's Top Philanthropists

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg gave away $254 million of his estimated $17.5 billion fortune to philanthropic causes last year, earning him the #4 spot on the list of Americans who gave the most to charity in 2009, according to the Chronicle of Philanthropy. Bloomberg’s giving has increased steadily over the past few years, as he donated $205 million in 2007, and then $235 million in 2008. [NYP]

Jamie Dimon Ups the Ante

His rival at Goldman Sachs may have won the bonus standoff, but all JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon has to say about that is WHAT ABOUT THIS:

"Calvert Asset Management Company, Inc., the Advisor to the Calvert Funds and a leading provider of sustainable and responsible investing, announced today that JPMorgan Chase and American Express each agreed to adopt an advisory vote on executive compensation as part of their proxy statements for their 2010 annual meetings. Through these advisory votes, both firms will hold a referendum on their compensation practices, providing shareholders with detailed information on salary, bonuses and benefits, and allowing them to vote to affirm or reject the package.

Who's the better man now, Lloyd? Not that Jamie cares what you think.

Kirsten Gillibrand to Jill Zarin: Fellow Senators ‘Treat Me Like Their Daughter’

Luckily, she has none of her Dads' chins.

Jill Zarin was an honorary speaker at last Saturday's Human Rights Campaign's annual gala, "Speak the Truth," and the very real housewife introduced Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, who of late has become a vocal advocate for pro-LGBT legislation. By the time we approached the reality leading lady (who is no stranger to confrontations among peers), we discovered she'd already done some reporting herself: "[Senator Gillibrand is] beautiful, young, and very personable. And I actually asked her what it's like in Washington with all the old men, because she's so beautiful," Zarin told us. "She said, 'Well, they treat me like their daughter.'" Really, now. We wondered whether Zarin bought that line, considering Gillibrand's stature as a newbie with potentially rocky future prospects. "Yes, but I sadly kind of think it's in more of a condescending way. You really have to earn respect [in Washington], you don't get a free pass walking in, especially because she was appointed, so it's harder for her to fight her way." We have yet to hear back from Gillibrand's press office on the accuracy of Zarin's reporting and political analysis.

Steve Phillips on Sex Addiction: ‘You’ve Got a Hole That You Need to Fill’

Steve Phillips, the former Mets general manager and ESPN baseball analyst who got caught boffing his 22-year-old assistant, is back from sex rehab (the same one Tiger Woods went to!), and he put himself on the Today show this morning to talk about how he wasn't just a pervy old man who got bored and decided to bang an underling, but has a serious problem, God was testing him, etc. etc., and how he had a "hole he needed to fill."

Anne Hathaway Leaves Catholic Church for Gay Brother

Anne Hathaway, who has been a part of the gay-rights movement since even before she co-starred in the landmark film Brokeback Mountain, told British GQ this month that she and her traditionally Catholic family left the Church over its views on homosexuality. Having a gay family member was enough to make them, like many other families, feel unwelcome. "The whole family converted to Episcopalianism after my elder brother came out,” she told the magazine. “Why should I support an organization that has a limited view of my beloved brother?" Though, in all honesty, after Hathaway's ex-boyfriend Raffaello Follieri embroiled the Vatican in a scandal over their seeming involvement in the convicted fraud's phony real-estate scheme, we're not sure the Church was so sad to see her go.
