• In the wake of the Great Subway Flood, city-council members are demanding that the MTA spend some $300 million to provide cell service on subway platforms — so that the transit agency can send riders jumbled, unintelligible text messages in the event of delays. [Metro NY]

• City officials are calling for a commission to look into potential problems with the area’s infrastructure. Great idea! Maybe it’d catch, say, exploding steam pipes before they explode! [NYDN]
• Mayor Bloomberg, who is totally not running for any kind of national office, makes plans to tour the country — to raise money for the World Trade Center memorial. He’ll visit South Carolina, Iowa, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and other states with important primaries and/or lots of electoral votes. [NYDN]
• The New York Post reports that the New York Post has formally called for open hearings into what the New York Post has dubbed “Troopergate” — Eliot Spitzer’s jihad against Joe Bruno. [NYP]
• Rayquon Story, a 19-year-old Bronx resident, was shot and killed on the 5 train early Sunday morning, after he and his friends got into an argument with another group on the train, one of whom pulled a gun and fired. Morning Line research suggests this is the first shooting death on the subway since February 2005. [NYT]
