New Real Housewives of New York City star Kelly Killoren Bensimon has been criticized as too bland in comparison with her catty castmates. Not any more: The socialite and former model was arrested last week for assaulting her longtime boyfriend, Nick Stefanov, in her Tribeca home. The couple (who Stefanov claims were engaged, though Killoren denies this) were having a fight over "usual stuff that couples fight about" when Killoren "sucker punched" him, Stefanov claims. His cheek was cut open, and he quickly headed to the police station to file a complaint. Bensimon was charged with misdemeanor third-degree assault, and turned herself in a couple of days later. She's due in court at the end of the month. According to the Post, Stefanov griped: "If I had done it to her, I would have been put in jail immediately … My injuries are worse than Rihanna's — and Chris Brown was charged with two felonies."
For the record, Killoren's lawyer says the charges are "unfounded" and that "the allegations are by a jilted lover." To our mind, there are some things that don't add up in this story:
1. According to both tabloids (and Patrick McMullan's photo archives), Killoren and Stefanov have been an item since 2006. But according to Killoren herself, who talked to a New York reporter last week, the next Real Housewives episode will feature a date between her and her "boyfriend" from last summer, Argentinian polo player Maximiliano Palacio.
2. Why do they disagree over whether they were engaged?
3. According to the Daily News, Stefanov said that Killoren "sucker punched" him. But he also said that she "had the courtesy to take her [engagement] ring off first." How can it possibly be a sucker punch if you watch someone take off their rings before they sock you?
We can't wait to see the crazy junk the other Housewives will have to come up with to top this.
