Paterson’s MTA Budget Plan Includes School Tax Reimbursements, Taxi Surcharge

The governor’s secret plan to save the MTA budget was hinted at yesterday when it was reported that he supports an increased payroll tax in the regions served by the transit system, but in order to make it less onerous on the massive education system, school districts would get reimbursements for the taxes. That would do much to plug the MTA budget gap, but not enough to toss the idea of putting a $1 surcharge on taxi rides, which is still on the table despite protests of irate cab drivers. [NYP]
