The Republican Party knew going into Barack Obama's presidency that at some point there would be a Supreme Court vacancy, and that they'd probably be helpless to stop his appointment. But, at the very least, they could look forward to the fact that Obama's blatantly liberal pick would inevitably reawaken their base, bringing with it a windfall of new money and participation. Sadly for the GOP, Sonia Sotomayor is apparently just too unobjectionable to provide even that minimal advantage. "She doesn’t have the punch out there in terms of fundraising and recruiting, I think at least so far," said Senator John Thune. Senator Lindsay Graham adds, "Right now, you don't have the fever pitch you did over the filibuster." Sigh. Why couldn't Obama have chosen someone more radical and unqualified to protect the Constitution?! Eh, what's the use.
