Yesterday, convicted girlfriend-beater Hiram Monserrate announced that he'd hired civil-rights lawyers Norman Siegel and Steve Hyman to defend him against the State Senate's efforts to censure or expel him. "Today, the Senate would seek to push back the clock and discredit the major movement that occurred here in the United States to protect the rights of all Americans," said Monserrate (who is Latino), going on to drop our favorite non sequitur of the weekend. "Students from the college that I went to died to help African-Americans have the right to vote." [NYDN]
