Pelosi Admits She Doesn’t Have the Votes

Confirming what was becoming clearer by the day, Nancy Pelosi said this morning that Democrats in the House wouldn’t pass the Senate’s health-care reform bill as it is now. A deal with the Senate in which changes to the bill would be made through the budget reconciliation process, which requires only 51 votes, is still possible. Or, increasingly likely, Congress could pass only the components of reform that are broadly popular. It would be as if the Democrats had been building Noah’s Ark for an entire year, and then at the last minute decided they could only save a pair of zebras. [WP]
