Democrats Might Actually Do Something About the Filibuster Eventually

Harry Reid told reporters today that the Democrats are “going to make some changes” to the filibuster, a tool that Republicans have utilized in unprecedentedly obstructive ways over the past year or so. But he’ll have to wait until the start of the next session of Congress, in 2011, when it will only take a majority to change the Senate rules, for some reason, instead of a two-thirds majority, as is usually required. This is especially important because Democrats are bound to lose at least a handful of Senate seats in the midterm elections. If filibuster reform doesn’t work, the next Senate might not pass anything, ever. [HuffPo, Ezra Klein/WP]
