For those of you who may have scoffed at New York’s recent crackdown on toy guns (we saw the PSA to the left on the 6 train last week and were like "this is seriously the most pressing issue NYC has going on right now?") … well, it’s apparently an actual thing!

In a bizarre and sad tale out of Brooklyn today, police have reported that a cop shot and killed a 22-year-old man who pointed an imitation handgun at him outside an elementary school.

After police received a 911 call this afternoon about a man threatening passersby with a gun near P.S. 194, a uniformed officer arrived on the scene to find a man, later identified as George D’Amoto Jr., holding “what appeared to be a silver handgun.” After D’Amoto failed to drop the “gun” when the officer asked him to, the cop shot him three times. He was pronounced dead at the hospital and the gun was confirmed a fake.
