Smoking in New York May Be Getting Even Pricier

The New York State Assembly is targeting cigarettes as its latest tactic to help balance the state budget. A $1-per-pack increase in the state’s cigarette tax will likely be included in the budget resolution revealed Wednesday by the Assembly’s Democratic contingent. Deemed the “least bad choice among all the revenues,” the hike would raise the state tax on cigarettes to a national high of $3.75 per pack. [NYDN]
