Hawaii Legislature Passes Same-Sex Civil-Union Bill

By

Yesterday, during the last hours of their legislative session, the Hawaii House of Representatives passed a bill to legalize same-sex civil unions by a vote of 31–20. HB 444 has already passed the State Senate, and now goes before Republican governor Linda Lingle, who has not said whether she supports or opposes it. If she vetoes the bill, the House would need 34 votes — three more than it currently has — to override her. [Star Bulletin]
