Hundreds of MTA Workers Will Not Be Celebrating on July 4 This Year

The MTA plans to lay off hundreds of bus drivers and subway workers by the Fourth of July, as the agency prepares to enforce its dramatic service cuts. More than 550 bus workers will lose their jobs by June 27, when dozens of bus lines and two subways are eliminated. An additional 122 subway employees will be out of work on July 4, the agency said. The service cuts are expected to save the MTA about $93 million, most of which will be due to the layoffs, as it attempts to close an $800 million budget shortfall. [NYT]
