Senate Officially Passes Financial Overhaul Bill

After voting to end a filibuster against stopping debate earlier today, the Senate passed the financial overhaul bill Thursday evening, seen as the most sweeping set of changes to the financial system since the New Deal. The bill was approved by a 59–39 margin, with four Republicans joining the Democratic majority. But it’s not time to uncork that bottle of Champagne you’ve been saving quite yet, as the bill will now be reconciled with the House version — where they will work out the differences the two bodies have with it — before both chambers vote again and then send the finalized bill to the president.
