Arizona senator Jon Kyl told a tea party audience last week that, like a movie villain who tells his adversary his entire plan for no reason, President Obama privately revealed to him that he won't secure the border because then Republicans "won’t have any reason to support comprehensive immigration reform." Though White House communications director Dan Pfeiffer insists that "the president didn’t say that and Senator Kyl knows it," Kyl's spokesperson responds, "There were two people in that meeting, and Dan Pfieffer [sic] was not one of them." It's hard to say what really happened, since it would be strange for Obama to be so blunt about his political calculations with a GOP senator, and it would also be a little odd for a GOP senator to just make up something like this out of whole cloth. See, these types of situations are exactly why we secretly record every conversation we have.
