South Carolina’s gubernatorial race just wasn’t insane enough one candidate challenging another to take a lie-detector test to prove she didn’t sleep with a blogger and a lobbyist is so humdrum so a Republican state senator named Jake Knotts decided to shake things up a bit with some ethnic slurs. Yesterday, while a guest on an Internet radio show that takes place in a bar, Knotts said:
“We already got one raghead in the White House. We don’t need another in the Governor’s Mansion.”
Classy. The second “raghead” Knotts was referring to is Republican Nikki Haley, who, you may be surprised to learn, was born a Sikh to two Indian-American parents, but converted to Methodism at some point and now “attends both services.” Knotts later offered up a pseudo-apology, but really, it’s our fault for not having a more sophisticated sense of humor.
“My ‘raghead’ comments about Obama and Haley were intended in jest. Bear in mind that this is a freewheeling, anything-goes Internet radio show that is broadcast from a pub. It’s like local political version of ‘Saturday Night Live.’
Huh, we haven’t seen any of those racial-slur jokes on SNL, but maybe they air them near the end, after we’ve already fallen asleep on the couch.
