Tonight on the Larry King show, Dr. Laura Schlessinger announced that she would not continue her popular radio show past the end of the year. The announcement comes a week after the talk-show host caused a national furor when she said the N-word eleven times over a five-minute period on her show.
Schlessinger's current contract is set to expire at the end of the year, and she said she came to the decision not to renew it because she no longer feels she can speak freely. Speaking to King, she said:
"I want to be able to say what's on my mind and in my heart and what I think is helpful and useful without somebody getting angry or some special-interest group deciding this is a time to silence a voice of dissent."
The soon-to-be-former radio personality says that she is not retiring, and looks forward to no longer having to "live in fear anymore."
