Jimmy Carter Secures Release of Detained American

The former president is leaving North Korea with 31-year-old U.S. citizen Aijalon Mahli Gomes, according to a Carter Center spokeswoman. Gomes, a Boston resident, was granted amnesty by the country after being sentenced in April to eight years at a labor camp when he was caught illegally crossing the China–North Korea border in January. Carter, traveling as a private citizen, arrived in the country Wednesday to negotiate the terms of the release. Gomes is expected to arrive in Boston by Friday afternoon.
