News that the U.S. and South Korea will launch a combined military exercise has resulted in quite the hissy fit from the North Korean government. A statement from the General Staff of the Korean People's Army stated that both countries would face “the severest punishment no one has ever met in the world.” The purpose of the eleven-day drill is to find out if U.S. and South Korean forces are prepared to deal with problems that may arise in the region. The announcement further escalates the tension that has been building since May, when the U.S. endorsed the findings of a report that blamed North Korea for the sinking of a South Korean ship. [CNN]
