Report: Jon Meacham Leaving Newsweek

When the news of Newsweek’s impending sale hit the wires earlier this year, editor Jon Meacham rallied his staff in a meeting and told them not to lose hope — he would work furiously to save the magazine. With the expected announcement of a sale by the Washington Post Company to stereo magnate Sidney Harman, it looks like — for now at least — he’s kept his promise. But according to Politico, Newsweek will continue on living without him. When the Harman sale is announced, Meacham’s departure is also scheduled to be revealed, the website reported. Sources told Politico that he had been planning to leave no matter who ended up buying the title. (Back when the sale was announced, Meacham told us he was committed to the magazine, and that his extracurricular commitments — a PBS show, two book deadlines — would not get in the way of that.) With Meacham gone, though, that may be one more seat for a current staffer saved: According to reports, Harman has pledged to keep onboard at least 250 of the magazine’s 325-person staff.
