Schumer-Backed Bill Will Send 1,500 New Agents to Border

The Senate passed a $600 million bill backed by the New York senator Thursday night that will bolster border security. The measure will send 1,500 new enforcement agents to the Mexico border, as well as airborne drones to search for illegal immigrants. “We are serious about making the border more secure than ever,” Schumer said. “Now our attention must turn to comprehensive reform.” The outline for his plan calls for significant additional spending, as he wants to spend “$176 million for a ‘strike force’ of 1,000 border agents to target hot spots, $89 million for 500 other border personnel, and $196 million for law enforcers and prosecutors.” [NYDN]
