Anti-gay groups like the National Organization for Marriage and the Family Research Council are boycotting the upcoming Conservative Political Action Conference over the participation in gay Republican group GOProud. CPAC organizers have stood up to them and allowed GOProud in, and now more mainstream conservatives are biting their thumbs at the religious right's bullying efforts. "I am not endorsing gay marriage, I'm not endorsing Don't Ask, Don't Tell," conservative blogger and pundit Andrew Breitbart said on his radio show yesterday. "I will be the harshest critic of the activist gay left, who I fear more than al-Qaida. But for these people not to exist in a two-party system, for you to tell them they're not welcome in the big tent, I have a huge problem with that and I'm going to indulge in my all '80s Depeche Mode, Cure, New Order fetish and we're going to have a big 'ol gay party at CPAC." Poor NOM president Maggie Gallagher, her efforts to browbeat other conservative groups into turning on gays don't seem to be working out. And she had just the right eighties outfit in her closet for the dance too.
