Is Graydon Carter Trying to Buy Elaine’s?

By

Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter has fashioned the semi-private Waverly Inn into a younger, hipper version of famed Upper East Side media hangout Elaine's. So it's no surprise that after the "salty den mother's" unfortunate passing, Carter would eye taking over the Waverly's older sister. Sources tell the New York Daily News that a deal is in the works with longtime Aretsky's Patroon restaurateur Ken Aretsky. But neither Carter, Aretsky, nor Elaine's manager, Diane Becker, who inherited the restaurant, would confirm the rumor. One of the paper's sources attributes that to a confidentiality agreement. But it could also have to do with the fact that Becker, who has a new chef, says Elaine's " was not for sale." [NYDN]
